text:
The blue bird–
old-fashioned maid
is fashioned out of Terror!
and nothing more solid
and nothing more serene
Capable of tameless
nameless pain that hugs the world
in her blue bosom
Holds the coastline ransom
She's been trampled and crossed
feather-tossed into a
bed of shards, bleaching
white as a wedding
and just as lifeless
Her cradle rocks us from the tree
throws rocks at my window
I wake in boneless Terror!
She draws back, lullaby
drawl as she trawls in dreams
rocks me back to sleep
Star-freckled carcass, scattered
light, light-footed
creeps in her own shadow
cramping at my doorstep
Oh, beauty! Oh, Terror!
Oh, life! Oh, I–
I love her like a coward
loves to lie.
